The Investment Case

The Most-Watched Company in the AI Buildout — Already Profitable at a Scale That Makes the Bull Case and the Bear Case Both Extreme

NVIDIA's numbers are not speculative in the way a pre-revenue biotech or an early-stage robotaxi program's numbers are: the Company generated $96.2 billion in a single quarter, with 75% gross margins and 63.7% net margins on a trailing-twelve-month basis, and has beaten its own guidance for 14 consecutive quarters. Demand visibility looks real too — management says its next-generation Vera Rubin platform already has purchase orders from every major customer and is on pace to be the fastest product ramp in the Company's history. Set against that: NVIDIA's own supply commitments for future products more than doubled in one quarter to $279 billion, a bet that this demand keeps materializing at the current pace; gross margin is already guided to compress on rising memory costs; a meaningful and growing share of GAAP net income has come from unrealized gains on equity investments rather than core chip sales; and the China market — once a significant growth driver — has been reduced to a rounding error in the Company's own guidance due to shifting U.S. export policy that shows no sign of full resolution. At a market cap near $5.3 trillion, NVIDIA doesn't need to invent a future business the way some smaller speculative names do — it needs to keep executing on an already-enormous one without a stumble.

Company Overview

Q2 FY2027 Results: Record Revenue, Real Profit

NVIDIA's fiscal Q2 2027 revenue of $96.22 billion topped the Company's own guidance midpoint of $91.0 billion by 5.7% and beat the LSEG analyst consensus of roughly $92.2 billion by about 4.4% — the 14th straight quarter the Company has beaten its own outlook. Data Center revenue reached $89.0 billion, up 117% year-over-year, driven by the ramp of Blackwell Ultra infrastructure; within that, Hyperscale revenue rose to $49 billion (+13% sequentially) and a category the Company calls ACIE (AI cloud/enterprise) revenue hit $40 billion, up 138% year-over-year. GAAP and non-GAAP gross margins both came in at 75.0%, roughly flat with the prior quarter. Non-GAAP diluted EPS of $2.22 beat the $2.09-2.10 consensus, while GAAP diluted EPS of $2.46 was up 128% year-over-year.

One nuance worth flagging directly: GAAP net income included a $7.8 billion unrealized gain on equity investments this quarter, down from a $15.9 billion gain the prior quarter. That's a meaningful, shrinking contributor to reported profit that has nothing to do with chip sales — core operating results (revenue, gross margin, operating income) are the more reliable read on the underlying business. On that operating basis, the quarter was genuinely strong: operating margin (TTM) stands at 66.2%, and the Company returned $26 billion to shareholders in the quarter alone, split between $20 billion in buybacks and $6 billion in dividends.

The China Wildcard

China has gone from a significant, growing NVIDIA market to a source of real uncertainty over the past 18 months. In April 2025, the U.S. government banned exports of NVIDIA's H20 chip (a China-specific, export-compliant product) "for the indefinite future," forcing a roughly $5.5 billion inventory charge. That ban was partially reversed in August 2025, with the Commerce Department resuming license issuance for H20 exports — but licenses for NVIDIA's more advanced chips to China have remained restricted throughout. By January 2026, CEO Jensen Huang said the H20 would be the last Hopper-architecture chip NVIDIA develops for China, citing the impossibility of further modifying that architecture to comply with export rules, and confirmed the Company no longer includes Chinese revenue in its own forward guidance — a market that generated roughly $17 billion, or about 13% of total revenue, as recently as fiscal 2025.

The practical upshot for investors: NVIDIA's reported guidance and the consensus estimates built around it already largely exclude China, which limits the risk of a nasty guidance miss tied to that market specifically. But it also means a large, historically important growth market remains structurally unavailable at anything close to its prior scale, with no clear timeline for that to change, and U.S.-China chip policy has proven capable of shifting abruptly in either direction.

Summary

NVIDIA, trading around $220 with a market cap near $5.3 trillion as of September 18, 2026, is a fundamentally different kind of report than most names on this page: this is not a speculative bet on a future business materializing, but a genuinely profitable, rapidly growing company already generating $303 billion in trailing revenue at 63.7% net margins. Q2 FY2027's $96.2 billion in revenue, 75% gross margin, and 14th consecutive guidance beat all point to real, current execution, and the Vera Rubin platform's advance purchase orders from every major customer suggest that execution has near-term legs. The genuine open questions are narrower but still real: whether gross margin holds up as memory costs rise, whether the $279 billion in forward supply commitments proves to be right-sized demand planning or overcommitment, how much of reported profit growth is coming from core chip sales versus volatile investment gains, and whether U.S.-China chip policy remains a permanent headwind or eventually eases. Near-unanimous analyst optimism reflects genuine current strength, but it is a sentiment reading, not a guarantee, and a stock already priced at $5.3 trillion has less room for a stumble than a smaller, less-followed name. This is a stock where the fundamentals are unusually strong for its size, but the size itself is the thing worth sitting with before deciding what more upside actually requires.

Disclaimer: This report is for informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice. It is not to be considered as an offer to buy or sell securities of any type. NVIDIA's business is subject to rapidly shifting U.S. export control policy affecting sales to China and other regions, and the Company has stated it no longer includes Chinese revenue in its forward guidance as of early 2026; this policy environment could change in either direction without notice. Forward guidance, product ramp timelines (including the Vera Rubin platform), and supply commitment figures described in this report are based on company disclosures and are forward-looking, not guarantees. Figures on gross margin trajectory, memory cost pressure, and the composition of GAAP net income (including non-operating investment gains) are based on company statements and SEC filings current as of publication and are subject to revision in future filings. Share price, market capitalization, and valuation multiples are approximate, can vary by data source and calculation method, and can move quickly given the stock's high volatility (beta near 2.2).
